Municipal Support

All municipal governments in New Brunswick receive leadership and support from the Provincial Department of Local Government. This department serves as a liaison with municipalities and rural communities, and provides advice and guidance on matters relating to finances, administration, policy and infrastructure. For more information on the role and responsibilities of the Department of Local Government, check their website at www.gnb.ca/localgovernment.

The Village of Doaktown is also a member of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick, an organization representing 57 municipalities (cities, towns and villages) in the Province of New Brunswick.

The objectives of the UMNB include:

  • uniting the municipalities of New Brunswick, through their respective councils, into a body whose common effort shall be devoted to the achievement of that which is to the benefit of all;
  • promoting the exchange of information;
  • cooperating and liaising with other organizations and agencies toward a united front for the realization of municipal goals;
  • preparing and presenting to government position papers that reflect UMNB concerns.

The UMNB has divided its member municipalities into “zones,” each of which meet periodically to discuss matters of mutual interest. The Village of Doaktown is a member of Zone 1 which also includes the City of Miramichi, Blackville, Bouctouche, Chipman, Minto, Neguac, Rexton, Richibucto, Rogersville, Saint Antoine, Saint Louis de Kent, and the Rural Community of Upper Miramichi. For a full listing of the UMNB zones, please refer to www.umnb.ca/locations.
